India Unveils INR 400 Crore Plan to Propel Green Hydrogen Development

New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has revealed its research and development (R&D) roadmap for the National Green Hydrogen Mission, allocating a substantial sum of INR 400 crore to foster a research ecosystem aimed at advancing the commercialization of green hydrogen.

The strategic roadmap places a strong emphasis on the advancement of materials, technologies, and infrastructure that can significantly enhance the efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation.

The announcement was made during an event organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in collaboration with the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited, coinciding with World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, conveyed in a video message, “On this World Hydrogen Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the research, development, and implementation of hydrogen solutions. Together, we can ensure that hydrogen becomes a cornerstone of a sustainable future for our planet Earth.”

Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, underscored the initial focus on “mission-mode projects, which are expected to yield results in 2-3 years,” with a dedicated R&D budget of INR 400 crore.

Bhupindar Singh Bhalla, Secretary of New and Renewable Energy, highlighted that India’s entry into the green hydrogen domain is well-timed, positioning the nation to emerge as a leader in the green hydrogen sector. He emphasized that the R&D roadmap aims to harness research capabilities to ensure India’s prominence in this vital global sector.

World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day holds international significance, underscoring the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source and the versatility of fuel cell technology. This day serves as a testament to hydrogen’s pivotal role in addressing challenges related to climate change, energy security, and environmental sustainability.
